Kokum is a dense, hard, dry, flaky (wax-like) butter which can be used instead of cocoa butter. It's rich in stearic acid - a saturated fatty acid which will coat and protect the skin.
This butter needs to be combined with softer butters and/or oils and is used topically only. Kokum will thicken and add firmness to your product when incorporated into balms, salves, or whipped butters. It's an emulsifier, will make soaps harder, and can help prevent melting of butter/oil blends in hot weather.
